This blend of organic acids combined with the aromatic alcohol benzyl alcohol provides a broad-spectrum preservative effect and protects the formulation from spoilage. Benzyl alcohol interferes with certain membrane functions of microorganisms and, internally, inhibits vital enzymes. The organic acids also weaken microorganisms from within by reducing intracellular pH, which ultimately leads to cell death. In this way, microorganisms are attacked from both the outside and the inside, even at low concentrations.

Applications:

Evicide® BBD is a COSMOS-accepted preservative mixture suitable for use in aqueous products, surfactant-based formulations, and emulsions. In some cases, pre-neutralization is necessary to achieve good solubility of the organic acids. After pre-neutralization, the pH should be adjusted to <6 for effective preservative action. When used as the sole preservative system, a concentration of 1% is recommended.
